history

Anna maria Gove, m.d.

Dr. Anna Maria Gove was a leader in the field of college health care. She came to the State Normal and Industrial School (now UNCG) in 1893. She was the second campus physician and the third female physician in North Carolina.

Her most difficult time on campus came in 1899 when a typhoid epidemic closed the school, claiming the lives of thirteen students and one staff member. She was universally praised by parents and students for her leadership in the situation.

Dr. Gove served in France during World War I. The US Army would not accept women physicians so she joined a Red Cross unit.

Dr. Gove understood the issues affecting college health, as chronicled in her annual reports.

She died in 1948 and was buried near her birthplace in Whitefield, NH.

1893-1895

The Student Health Services consisted of one room in the Foust Building. It served as an exam room and Dr. Gove’s office.

1951

A one hundred bed capacity student health facility was constructed in 1951 and opened in 1953. The initial construction cost was $466,000. This structure was incorporated into the current space, completed in 2006.
