Student Health Services (SHS) provides Psychiatric care for enrolled UNCG students by board-certified providers.

·Services offered include psychiatric evaluations, medication evaluation and on-going medication management.

Common conditions that are treated include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and others.

Our providers can provide on-going medication management for students with a current diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), however, evaluations for ADHD are not done by our psychiatry providers (see policy below). We can assist with resources and referral if needed for testing/assessment.

Scheduling a Psychiatry Appointment

Students are typically first evaluated by a therapist in Counseling and Psychological Services and then referred to Psychiatry for a medication evaluation.

  • Initial Psychiatry appointment – 60 minutes
  • Follow up appointments for medication management – 30 minutes

Late arrivals do not allow enough time to provide appropriate care. Students who are more than 10 minutes late will need to reschedule their appointment and will be charged the no-show fee (see below).

In order to maintain access to psychiatry services for ALL students, regardless of insurance coverage, there is a charge for psychiatry services. The charge is significantly below charges in the community. These fees are covered 100% by Student Blue and may be covered out of network with other insurance carriers.

No-Show Policy

Psychiatry appointments are limited. Students who fail to cancel a scheduled Psychiatry appointment at least 24 hours in advance and students who are more than 10 minutes late for an appointment will be charged a no-show fee of $25.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Policy

Prescription medications for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will not be issued by our Psychiatric providers without the patient first completing a formalized psychological assessment/testing to confirm the diagnosis.

The testing must be current, having been done within three (3) years before seeking services with our Psychiatric providers.

If you have had testing within three years, please bring a copy of the testing to your first appointment.

If you have not had testing completed or it has been longer than 3 years, please speak with a therapist in Counseling and Psychological Services about a referral for testing.
