The Student Blue portal will open to accept insurance enrollments and waivers for “eligible, registered” students beginning in June for the Fall and November for the Spring semesters. As returning and new students register for classes, they will receive emails through their UNCG email address from Student Blue and UNCG Student Health notifying them of their eligibility to access the portal and submit fall enrollments or waivers.

Please allow 1–3 business days for the email notifications to be processed. The deadlines for fall and spring insurance enrollment and waiver submissions are September 10 and February 2. For more information, visit studentbluenc.com/#/uncg.

The UNC system mandates health insurance for most students. Students have the option to enroll in the student blue plan, remain under their parent’s coverage, or secure their policy. Proof of insurance must be submitted via an online waiver through the Student Blue Portal.

Student Blue Health Insurance Plans for Fall 2025 and Spring 2026: Students have the option to select from two plans:

Premium Plan costs per semester: $1583.50 (undergraduate) | $1802.92 (graduate)
Value Plan costs per semester: $1226.80 (undergraduate) | $1396.54 (graduate)

Review your emails from Student Blue and UNCG Student Health each semester to check the current status of your waiver.

The following UNC Greensboro students are required to have health insurance. When they register for the semester, they are automatically charged the current semesterly premium amount for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).

Undergraduate Students: enrolled in 6 or more credit hours in a degree-seeking on-campus program or major.
Graduate Students: enrolled in 1 or more credit hours in a degree-seeking on-campus program or major.
International Students: All students with F-1 or J-1 visas. (see new requirements)
Integrative Community Studies (ICS) Beyond Academics: enrolled in 6 or more credit hours.

NOTE: Students in distance/online programs or majors are NOT ELIGIBLE for Student Insurance and are not required to waive it.

All outside insurance policies must be effective by September 1st for the fall semester and February 1st for the spring semester to be verified for waiver purposes.
Students in “Online Programs” are not eligible to enroll in the student insurance plan nor charged an insurance premium, therefore not required to submit a waiver.
Medicaid Family Planning is not credible health insurance and will not be approved to obtain a waiver.
If your UNC Greensboro- Student Account has been charged the current semesterly premium for the Student Blue plan, you are required to have health insurance.
Only students who are eligible for the mandatory hard waiver UNC System Student Health Insurance Plan are eligible for coverage.
All charges for the Student Blue insurance premium will appear on your UNC Greensboro Student Account. Please review it to see charges and credits. When your waiver has been approved, a credit (looks like a payment) of the premium amount will appear on your Student Account.
Student Blue insurance does not provide coverage for dependents (spouses, domestic partners, and children) and does not cover students on a voluntary basis.
To waive using TRICARE or Veteran Affairs insurance, enter the sponsor or Military Member’s social security number or DOD number.
If you purchase Student Blue insurance, you must go online to activate the insurance by enrolling.
Insurance premiums cannot be prorated.

Enrollments or Waivers must be submitted through the Student Blue portal.
Before access to the portal will be granted, students must register for the required number of credit hours in a degree-seeking on-campus program to be eligible for student insurance.
For returning students, the StudentBlue portal opens in early May for the Fall semester and early November for the Spring semester.
New students become eligible to enroll/waive upon their registration.
The fall student insurance enrollment or waiver submission deadline is September 10 for the Fall semester and February 2 for the Spring semester.
There is a two-week appeal period if students miss the February 2 waiver deadline. The Student Blue portal will remain open to receive enrollments or waivers through February 16, 2026. Once the appeal period closes, no further appeals for enrollments or waivers will be accepted for the fall 2026 semester
Due to increased portal activity, waiver verification may be delayed during May and June.

All F1 & J1 Visa International students are required to have health insurance while attending UNC Greensboro. Students must enroll in one of the Student Health Insurance Plan options.

Beginning January 1, 2026 ALL international students in F1 or J1 non immigratnt status must enroll in the UNC System Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Please see the FAQ for detailed information.

International students will no longer be able to submit a waiver request through the Student Blue portal. There are 2 plans, Value and Premium, to choose from.

Students will need to take action and complete an enrollment transcation in the Student Blue Portal. Active enrollment begins on November 1, 2025 for coverage starting January 1, 2026. Early enrollment ensures timely receipt of your member ID and insurance card.

It may be possible to waive the requirement with alternative coverage for Spring!

A waiver request may be considered if one of the following conditions apply:

a) student is enrolled in another approved university-sponsored plan such as the Graduate Student Health Insurance Plans at NC State & UNC Chapel Hill

b) Students holding F-1 or J-1 non-immigrant status that carry insurance through their sponsoring agency, government or program

c) A student who needs to maintain insurance for their dependents allowing them to meet the insurance requirement with GeoBlue

d) A student has an approved waiver for Fall 2025 with an insurance plan that covers them for the full 2025-2026 academic year and for which they have already paid their annual premium. Please note: this will be a considered for Spring 2026 only; International students will be expected to enroll in the UNC SHIP for Fall 2026.

All students are welcome to use Student Health Center services. The Student Health Center is not a Medicaid provider. However, there are charges for lab, X-ray, pharmacy, allergy shots, physical therapy and special procedures. Since we are not a Medicaid provider, students may be seen at Student Health Services but will be responsible for these charges.
