August

Once students arrive on campus in August, Spartan Well-Being provides support and information on the Eight Dimensions of Wellness through our programming like workshops, support groups, and Wellness Wednesdays.

We also host a Be Well. Stay Well. event. The event introduces the Eight Dimensions of Wellness to our students, helps them recognize how each dimension works to enhance their overall well-being, and empowers students to take care of their wellness using tools and resources available on campus and within themselves!

September

September is Suicide Prevention Month. Spartan Well-Being raises awareness of the lives lost to suicide in higher education settings. We sponsor campus wide initiatives to encourage students to seek support when they are in need and show our commitment to suicide prevention. Our campaign includes staking an area on campus with pinwheels in honor of people we’ve lost to suicide and distributing suicide awareness pins and buttons. We invite the campus community to join us by learning more about mental health through our Ask, Listen Refer (ALF), Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), and our Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Trainings. We also co-host Light the Night, an event to share art, words, prayers, and stories of hope for those whose lives have been touched by suicide.

october

October is Relationship Violence Awareness Month. This campaign focuses on educating students on signs of abuse and violence in their relationships and understand the cycle of violence. The campaign also provides tools and resources to empower students to make decisions about how to navigate or leave relationships that aren’t healthy. We also invite students to reflect on if or how their behaviors may be part of the cycle of violence and how that may affect their partners, friends, and family.

Each semester, in partnership with Guilford County Health Department, Spartan Well-Being hosts a Free STI/HIV testing event and health fair. This event’s purpose is to improve access to free STI and HIV testing on campus as well as provide health education, consultations, and connect students with campus and community resources to improve sexual health outcomes. In the fall, the STI Testing event will take place in October.

The Maintain Your Focus and Finish Strong campaigns encourage Spartans to stay focused and on task to finish the semester STRONG! Tackle those assignments and ace that test by planning, preparing, and incorporating self-care into the mix as well. Wellness Themed Rooms and Grab and Go Snacks are two of the ways that students can decompress and manage stress.

december

In the Wellness Themed Rooms students have access to Academic Success Peer Coaches, Well-Being Peer Guides, study strategies, stress management activities, a space to decompress, snacks, drinks and so much more! We have three themed rooms:

1. Decompression Room- A quiet room with soft music, soothing virtual seascapes, spaces to stretch, aroma therapy, and a quiet space to just be for a moment and decompress.

2. Stress Management Room- A non-quiet room with music (student’s choice) stress management activities, engagement with staff and other students, puzzles, coloring, games, and some on the spot stress management coaching with Well-Being Peer Guides.

3. Focus/Study Room- A quiet study space with bright lights, focus generating aromatherapy, focus techniques for studying, retention techniques, and on the spot study techniques and coaching with Academic Success Peer Coaches.

Exams are a stressful time for students. Many will pull an “all nighter” to cram for an exam and may head out to take an exam without getting a decent bite to eat. Students can stop by the Spartan Well-Being Grab and Go Snacks event, located in the EUC hallway, all through exam week for a pick me up. We have coffee, tea, and a hot chocolate bar; healthy snacks, candy and encouraging messages for students! Staff are on standby to cheer you on, provide encouragement, hear about how your exam went and help you get through it.

january

Spartan Well-Being will provide programming and information in January to help students Be Well and Stay Well. Like the Be Well. Stay Well. event in the fall, we’ll help students recognize how each of the Eight Dimensions of Wellness collectively works to enhance their overall well-being.

February

This campaign focuses on raising awareness about substance use and misuse that can lead to dependence and addiction. Spartan Well-Being highlights the risks associated with commonly used and misused substances, addresses harm reduction strategies to help keep you safe, and highlights process and behavior addictions that may be impacting health and wellbeing.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a time to draw attention to the prevalence of sexual assault and educate individuals and communities about how to prevent it. Learn how to take steps to build connected communities and enhance your knowledge of sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. In addition, Spartan Well-Being invites you to explore how to create communities where everyone feels safe and supported. We’re asking you to join us in building connected communities that promote equity and respect, as our connections to one another have an impact more significant than just ourselves. We also co-host ‘Take Back the Night’, an event to hear from survivors of sexual assault and engage in advocacy to prevent instances of sexual assault on campus and in the community.

The FINISH STRONG campaign encourages Spartans to finish the semester STRONG! Tackle those assignments and ace that test by planning, preparing, and incorporating self-care into the mix as well.
