Referral Services for Students (CC)

The UNCG Counseling Center offers an initial screening appointment for the purposes of discussing your concerns to determine the best course of action to resolve your distress.  Sometimes, due to various reasons, it may be indicated that it would be most beneficial for you to be referred to a provider outside of the UNCG Counseling Center. If this is the case, the Clinical Case Manager is here to assist you with that process and ensure that you connect with the best-fit provider or agency.

The Case Manager routinely networks with and refers to a variety of off-campus mental health providers, including counselors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc.

For assistance with accessing community resources and obtaining a referral, contact the Counseling Center at (336) 334-5874 and request an appointment with the Case Manager. If you are currently meeting with a clinician at the Counseling Center, you also have the option of talking with them about connecting with the Case Manager.

Things to consider when choosing a therapist:

  • Location
  • Gender
  • Race
  • Age
  • Areas of Expertise
  • Insurance
  • Fees/Payment Policy
  • Sliding Scale
  • Cultural
  • Populations Served
  • Religion/Spirituality
  • Language
  • Time/Schedule
  • Transportation

Tips for Scheduling the Appointment:

  1. Choose 2-3 the therapists to call. You will likely leave a message because they are often in session with clients so DO NOT hang up! Clearly and slowly state your name, request to schedule an appointment and state your phone number 2 times so the therapist can accurately write down your number to call you back.
  2. Wait for a call back. If you do not receive a return call in 2-3 business days, call again and/or choose another therapist to contact.
  3. When you do connect with the therapist via phone, the therapist may ask you to share a brief summary of your concerns and why you are seeking therapy. This is also the time for you to ask YOUR questions, like if they specialize in working with certain issues or symptoms, etc.
