Sexual & Gender Orientation

The process of understanding one’s gender and sexuality is an ongoing process. This process may become heightened during the college years, when independence and social relationships are intensified. Some individuals mention that they have been aware of their sexual or gender orientation from a time when they were very young, and others say they have not been aware of this until adolescence or adulthood. One does not have to be sexually active to identify their sexual orientation, as this orientation is as much about emotions and identity as it is about sexual relationships. An individual’s feelings can fluctuate over time, and it is not essential to label yourself immediately, if at all. The process of understanding one’s gender and sexuality may be challenging, and thus we encourage students to meet with a counselor or UNCG Safe Zone Ally for support and/or a student or local community organization.
