Sexuality & Gender Identity and Expression

The process of understanding one’s gender and sexuality is often ongoing, which may become more challenging or visible during the college years when independence and social relationships are intensified. Some individuals have been aware of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression since childhood, while for others this realization has not occurred until adolescence or adulthood. A person does not need to act upon their sexuality or engage in any sort of gender transition to identify or express themselves as such. It is normal for one’s sexual and emotional attraction, gender identity, and gender expression to fluctuate and change. This process may be confusing, scary, or challenging because of external barriers/stressors. Therefore, we support every student in consulting one of the UNCG or community resources below including the UNCG Counseling Center.
