Mood Swings

Everyone has experienced highs and lows at some point in their life. It is normal to experience fluctuations in one’s mood now and then. A mood swing may be described as a rapid change in one’s emotional state. These swings may be associated with everyday stressors, hormonal fluctuations, transitions in your life, irritability or fatigue. Just because one experiences a mood swing does not indicate presence of a mental disorder.

Some psychiatric diagnoses that are associated with mood swings are bipolar disorder, cyclothymia, some personality disorders, and substance abuse or dependency issues. However, mood irregularities may be due to a multitude of factors and should not be automatically associated with these disorders.

A mood tracking system may be beneficial to keep if you are concerned about your highs and lows. An online example is http://www.moodtracker.com. If you are concerned about your mood swings, or would like to explore your concerns further, counseling may be beneficial.
