Counseling Services

Initial Screening

The staff of the CC use a model of brief psychological and interpersonal health interventions.  This model allows us to provide high quality mental health services to the ever-increasing volume of students who seek counseling each semester.  The top two issues college students have, at this campus as well as across the US, are anxiety and relationship problems.

The purpose of the first visit at the CC, the initial screening  (LINK TO WHAT TO EXPECT), is to determine the most effective course of treatment for you. So the counselor might recommend  participating in a CC workshop, group, or individual counseling  or doing weekly, ongoing counseling with an off-campus counselor or getting involved with other community-based services. To schedule a screening interview, call the Counseling Center, 336-334-5874.

 Individual Counseling

At the end of the screening interview, the counselor may recommend individual counseling at the CC. These counseling sessions occur every 2-3 weeks.  In between sessions, you may be asked to practice a particular coping skill or have some other therapeutic assignment.  Individual counseling is focused on helping you help yourself by making changes in how you interact with yourself and others. What you do in between sessions matters as much as what you do in the sessions.  At each session, you will need your student ID in order to register for that session. Also, before each visit, you will complete an assessment measure. Arriving 5-10 minutes before your actual session time will provide plenty of time for you to complete the assessment thoughtfully and honestly.
